An amazing combination of power, complexity, and balance. This wine is built for the long haul if you keep a cellar. The great thing about the 2005s, though, is how juicy and enjoyable they are already but, if so inclined, this should age beautifully for 15-20 years. This wine is 100% Syrah from Z Block at Bien Nacido Vineyard, a 5 acre block planted exclusively for Qupé in 1992. Z Block is situated on a southwest facing hillside about 800 feet above the valley floor below… a perfect place for grapes, a perfect site for our top Syrah.

Young and tannic, with nettle and thyme-infused blackberry and cedar flavors that are locked down with astringency. Very complex and earthy. Needs at least 4–6 years to blossom. Best after 2011.

The 2005 Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard Hillside Estate boasts a complex bouquet of lead pencil shavings, creme de cassis, tar, camphor, and black fruits. This full-bodied Syrah possesses admirable acidity, a lovely texture, elegance, and overall harmony. It is a stylish, concentrated wine to consume over the next 8 to 10 years.

Biodynamic designation is regulated by Demeter, an international certification organization. Biodynamic agriculture is based on the view of a farm as a self-contained organism. Certified organic vineyards must meet Demeter"s additional criteria for a period of one year before earning the designation "biodynamic."
Sustainably Grown
Sustainable practices incorporate organic standards and may exceed them and include ecologically and socially sound business practices such as fair pay for farm workers and energy conservation.
Screw Cap
Wines sealed with a screw cap as opposed to a cork, which experts report protects and preserves wine more effectively than does a cork, while also eliminating the possibility of cork taint.
No Sulfites
All wines naturally contain some sulfites, however wines that contain less than 10 parts per million sulfites are not required to include "Contains Sulfites" on their labels.

I still believe it is the simplest way to rate a wine, with its origins from grade school in the United States. A wine that I rate 90 points or more is outstanding (A), and worth buying. If I rate a wine 95 points or more (A+), it is a must buy.
